Mass media company Viacom Inc is hurting from within. Earlier today (Aug. 3) the company posted its earnings for third quarter, ended June 30, and from the look of it the company’s advertising revenue is down 7 percent.
Reporters said Viacom is hurting by weak advertising sales at its U.S. cable networks, primarily with its children’s cable network Nickelodeon and by poor showing at the box office for its movie studios. The Wrap. The company’s earning for third quarter went down $523 million compared to same-time last year $574 million.
DirectTV may be dropping Viacom, the American global mass media company 26 channels including, BET, MTV, VH1 and others if no new deal is signed soon. The two company seven-year contract expired last weekend, and both sides have failed to find a desirable middle ground. Reported CBS News.
As a result, they said DirectTV will be taking down Viacom channels on Tuesday (July 10), but according to Viacom blog post. “DirecTV is throwing around some big numbers that are misleading. Here’s the truth: Viacom is asking DirecTV for an increase of a couple of pennies per day per subscriber. That’s far less than DirecTV pays other programmers with fewer viewers than Viacom. Viacom has always been open to negotiating and hopes to get a deal done.”
